#1 What causes headaches & migraines?
There are a variety of causes for headache pain. Three major causes are muscle tension, changes in blood pressure inside the brain, and a poorly aligned spine that causes bones to apply pressure to surrounding nerves. Muscle tension may be the result of poor posture, stress, lack of sleep or poor health.
#2 What are the types of headaches?
There are three basic types of headaches: tension, migraine and cluster headaches.
#3 What are tension headaches?
Tension headaches are the most common type of headache, and are often the result of stress or poor posture. Tension headaches may also be the result of poorly aligned vertebra; misaligned bones in the spine can cause painful muscle spasms in the neck, resulting in a headache.
#4 What are migraines?
Migraines are the most painful and debilitating type of headache. Migraines cause intense pain often accompanied by nausea and sometimes sensitivity to light and sound. Migraines are the result of constriction then rapid dilation of blood vessels in the brain; the rapid increase in blood pressure inside the skull causes excruciating pain.
#5 What are cluster headaches?
Cluster headaches earn their name by occurring three or four times each day for several days. These headaches cause pain behind the eyes, with the pain being less intense than migraine headache pain.
#6 Can headaches and migraine be prevented?
Some headaches and migraines can be avoided by reducing stress and increasing exercise. Migraine suffers may reduce the frequency and severity of headaches by identifying and avoiding substances that trigger changes in blood pressure inside the brain. Known migraine triggers include the tyramine in aged cheese, alcohol, food additives and cold foods. Certain foods can trigger migraines, such as nuts and seeds, pizza, potato chips, organ meats, breads, and some fruits.
#7 Can chiropractic adjustment help with headaches & migraines?
Toronto chiropractor Dr. Brian Dower offers chiropractic care that effectively treats pain associated with headaches & migraines. Chiropractic adjustments to realign the spine are especially effective for conditions originating in the patient’s neck. Adjustments can also relieve muscle tension that causes headaches. Other therapies, such as ice, heat, laser and massage therapy also relieve headache pain.
#8 Aside from adjustments, what else can a chiropractor do to relieve headaches and migraines?
A Toronto chiropractor can also review your diet to identify migraine triggers, offer advice on posture, and teach patients exercise and relaxation techniques to keep muscles flexible.
#9 Can chiropractic care work for both acute and chronic conditions?
Chiropractic adjustments and treatments offer long-lasting relief from acute or chronic headaches & migraines. Unlike drug therapies that use dangerous and potentially addicting opioids, chiropractic care relieves acute headache pain and is appropriate for long-term use.
