Migraines are the most painful and debilitating type of headache. Migraines cause intense pain often accompanied by nausea and sometimes sensitivity to light and sound. Migraines are the result of constriction then rapid dilation of blood vessels in the brain; the rapid increase in blood pressure inside the skull causes excruciating pain.

#5 What are cluster headaches?

Cluster headaches earn their name by occurring three or four times each day for several days. These headaches cause pain behind the eyes, with the pain being less intense than migraine headache pain.

#6 Can headaches and migraine be prevented?

Some headaches and migraines can be avoided by reducing stress and increasing exercise. Migraine suffers may reduce the frequency and severity of headaches by identifying and avoiding substances that trigger changes in blood pressure inside the brain. Known migraine triggers include the tyramine in aged cheese, alcohol, food additives and cold foods. Certain foods can trigger migraines, such as nuts and seeds, pizza, potato chips, organ meats, breads, and some fruits.
