Kinesio Taping in Downtown Toronto

The Kinesio Taping® Method may seem like a futuristic new therapy for treating muscle and joint problems, but it was developed more than 35 years ago. Dr. Kenzo Kase, a renowned Japanese chiropractor and acupuncturist, developed Kinesio® Tex Tape as a way to help his own patients. At the time, taping techniques used in physical therapy were focused mainly on immobilizing affected joints. Dr. Kase believed a more flexible product might better treat the muscle, which was the source of most patient complaints—not the joint. With that idea in mind, Dr. Kase developed Kinesio® Tex Tape to mimic the same level of elasticity as human muscle.

Kinesio Taping with Dr. Brian DowerThough many types of sports tape and taping therapies exist today, only Dr. Kase’s innovative product and techniques qualify as Kinesio Taping®. In order to provide the best possible care for our patients, Dr. Dower is trained and certified in the Kinesio Taping® Method.

How Does Kinesio Taping® Method Work?

The theory behind taping is based on the study of Kinesiology. During injury, the space between and skin becomes compressed. Nerve receptors and lymph channels exist within that space and are also compressed. Proper placement of Kinesio tape pulls the skin up and away from muscle tissue, creating more room between skin and muscle and relieving pressure on nerves and lymph channels. When this pressure is relieved, nerves may stop sending pain receptors to the brain. Improved lymph drainage can help the injury to heal naturally.

The six basic corrections attributed to taping are:

  • Mechanical
  • Fascial
  • Space
  • Ligament/Tendon
  • Functional
  • Circulatory/Lymphatic

Kinesio Taping® may also improve joint function. Specific taping methods are believed to strengthen joints by influencing opposing muscle groups around the joint.

Who Benefits from Kinesio Taping®?

Kinesio Taping® is frequently utilized in sports medicine, and is well-known for improving muscle performance. Athletes of all kinds have found Kinesio Taping® to be beneficial for treating injury and enhancing performance. However, the benefits of taping aren’t limited to athletes. Anyone who’s suffered a joint or muscle injury or is experiencing chronic pain related to injury is a candidate for taping therapy.

The Kinesio Taping® Method is used to treat:

  • ACL injuries
  • Ankle injury

  • Back pain

  • Knee pain

  • Muscle soreness

  • Muscle strain

  • Plantar fasciitis

  • Rotator cuff tears

  • Running injuries

Taping has also been shown to be effective on treating scar tissue. Some patients report a decrease in contractures and improvement in pliability of scars as a result of Kinesio Taping®. It may also improve the overall look of a scar by decreasing signs of pitting and making the tissue look and feel softer and flatter.
